ON THE RESTING STAGES OF THE JB-1 ASCITES TUMOUR

Cytophotometric determination of single-cell DNA after repeated ³H-thymidine labelling of the JB-1 ascites tumour in the plateau phase of growth showed a massive accumulation of unlabelled cells with both G₁ and G₂ content. Autoradiography combined with cytophotometry or colcemid block demonstrated that some of these unlabelled cells were rapidly triggered into the cell cycle when plateau tumours were transferred to new hosts. This indicated that tumour cells may be held up in non-cycling stages corresponding to both the G₁ and the G₂ phase of the cell cycle.
