Abstract:Serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA), but not several other putative neurotransmitters, stimulate cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) production in slices of Aplysia gill. Furthermore, 5-HT but not DA increases cAMP in slices of the heart of Aplysia. Several lines of evidence indicate that the receptors are distinct entities; however, no drugs were found to block one receptor without affecting the other.
