Abstract:A single sterile specimen of a moss-like plant is describedfrom the Drybrook Sandstone (Lower Carboniferous) of the Forestof Dean, Gloucestershire. Comparison is made with fossil andliving mosses and as a result it is referred to the Bryalesand named Muscites plumatus sp. nov. The records of other palaeozoicmosses are considered but many are so doubtful that the presentspecimen is believed to be the oldest moss known.
