Abstract: | Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in position 1(2) of steroids catalyzed during fermentation with Nocardia sp. by only a single enzyme, 3-oxo-4-ene-steroid : (acceptor)-1-ene-oxidoreductase (steroid-1-dehydrogenase) are described. The reversibility of this reaction was confirmed by enzyme induction under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The mechanism of the hydrogenation reaction was established by H-D-exchange experiments in bisubstrate reactions. |
