Abstract: | Henryk Fryderyk Hoyer (1834--1907) is rightly considered to be the father of Polish histology. Despite his major scientific achievements his work has undeservedly been overlooked in the medical historical literature outside Poland. Apart from the fact that Hoyer was the first to have conclusively proved on the basis of successful histological methods the existence of arteriovenous anastomoses, his innovations in the area of histological technique were of the greatest importance for histological research. Here the most important publications of Hoyer in German scientific journals are considered. Until now there has been no critical historical analysis of Hoyer's German works. This is the first attempt at such an analysis. |
