Abstract: | Extracellular recordings were made of spontaneously active neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) of neonatal rats. The firing pattern and rate of these neurons were similar to those characterized for 5-HT-containing cells in the DRN of adult rats. Neonatal DRN cells were also inhibiteby small systematic doses of LSD, as previously described for 5-HT-containing DRN neurons in adult rats. These results indicate that DRN neurons in neonatal rats are physiologically active and display many characteristics similar to mature 5-HT-containing DRN neurons. |
