Abstract:The body temperature and oxygen consumption of freshly trapped Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) and Common Tree Shrews (Tupaia glis) were measured in Malaysia. The Slow Loris had a low body temperature and oxygen consumption, while the values for the Common Tree Shrew were relatively high. The data are discussed in relation to information obtained from captive animals. The importance of the Slow Loris is stressed because it represents one of the few natural hypometabolic states in primates.
