Abstract: | Preparations of RuBP carboxylase are shown to carry out an oxygen dependent decarboxylation of L-3-phosphoglyceric acid. The product of this reaction is probably phosphoglycollate. L-3-phosphoglyceric acid, formed by RuBP carboxylase is therefore proposed to be the primary substrate for photorespiration. |
