Abstract:An oligomeric form of tubulin present in microtubule protein prepared from mammalian brain, the 36S double ring containing tau protein, is reported to bind colchicine. Colchicine binds to each individual 6S tubulin subunit in the 36S ring without apparent effect on quarternary structure. The colchicine-oligomer complex forms by colchicine binding directly to the tubulin ring; alternatively, complexes formed by colchicine with 6S tubulin subunits associate in the presence of tau protein to form the colchicine-oligomer complex.
