Abstract:In bacteria, coordinate expression of genes involved in lactose metabolism is regulated by the lac repressor and its DNA binding sequence, the lac operator. The lac operator-repressor complex can also be used to regulate gene expression in the laboratory mouse. In this review, I discuss the current state of murine trans-operons, and suggest ways this lac-based system might be used to build more advanced models of human diseases in the mouse.
