| Abstract: | Sixteen representative species of Pterygota are selected to analyse the development of morphological characteristics of metathoracic pleural sclerites in different taxa. A well-resolved cladogram of preliminary evolutionary relationships is produced with the topology: [Ephemeroptera + (Odonata + Neoptera)]+ [Plec-optera+(Megaloptera+Neuroptera+(Orthoptera+(Hemiptera+(Coleoptera+(Mecoptera+Lepidoptera+(Hymenoptera+Diptera))))))].
