Abstract: | Morphological and genetic differentiation between populations of freshwater amphipods initially identified as Paramelita spinicornis are examined. Morphological data are analysed by means of cluster and discriminant functions analyses and genetic differentiation determined using starch gel electrophoresis. The 11 populations form two distinct groups, one of which corresponded to the described species, P. spinicornis , while the other is clearly recognizable as a new species, which is described here. |
