An investigation of aquatic bacteria capable of utilizing chitin as the sole source of nutrients

Abstract:R. OSAWA AND T. KOGA. 1995. A total of 48 bacterial strains capable of utilizing chitin (a polymer of N -acetyl-D-glucosamine NAG]) as a sole source of nutrients were isolated from river and marine waters in Tokushima. These bacteria were identified as Vibrio fluvialis, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, V. mimicus, Listonella anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila . All strains were found positive for chitinase and chitobiase activities, and capable of utilizing NAG as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen.
