Abstract: | The Rpg1 gene, which has provided North American cultivars of barley with resistance to the stem rust fungus Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici for more than 60 years, has been cloned. A single copy of the gene can confer resistance to a susceptible barley variety. Although unexplained, the progeny are consistently more resistant than the variety from which the gene was obtained. The gene might represent a new class of plant resistance genes. |
