Abstract: | The biological importance of the oxygen affinity of the tetrameric haemoglobin molecule and its dependency from co-factors is described. Oxygen affinity variations during development from embryonic to adult values are discussed in respect to oxygen uptake from maternal blood via placenta, in lungs and gills as well as to oxygen delivery into tissues. Comparative aspects of the molecular mechanisms leading to affinity changes are presented. |
