STUDIES ON THE EARLY FERTILIZATION OF ARISTICHTHYS NOB1LIS BY SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

The process of fertilization in big-head carp (Aristichthys nobilis) studied with scanning electron microscopy is as follows: The sperm passed through the micropylar canal of the egg chorioh, attached to the microvilli of the sperm entry site and fused immediately. No distinct fertilization cone was formed at the sperm entry site during sperm penetration. The sperm head was almost incorporated into the egg at 1 minute post insemination, and in some cases the entire tail of the sperm was packed by the microvilli of the egg. There was a first polar body which was still connected with the egg near the fertilizing sperm. The function of the sperm entry site was discussed.
