Abstract: | Polyclonal antibodies raised against purified (R)-specific alcohol dehydrogenase of Lactobacillus kefir were used in Western blot analyses to search for structurally or immunologically related proteins. No immunochemical reactions were found with commercially available alcohol dehydrogenases (from yeast, horse liver and Thermoanaerobium brockii), but screening among the genus Lactobacillus revealed that each strain of a subgroup of Betabacterium gave positive results whereas strains of the other subgroups of Lactobacillus were found to be inactive. However, enzymatic assays with these antibody-positive strains showed, that besides L. kefir itself, only the strains of L. brevis possess alcohol dehydrogenase activity with acetophenone and NADPH as substrates. |
