Direct Preservation in Alcohol Causes Deformation of Taxonomic Key-Characters in Anostraca (Crustacea)

Branchipus visnyai Kertész , 1956 is a synonym for B. schaefferi Fisher , 1834. Fixation of males of a B. schaefferi population in 70% alcohol induced swelling of the antennal parts, which is typical for B. visnyai. Fixation in 4% formaline, on the other hand, retains the normal B. schaefferi antennal morphology. The key-characteristics of B. visnyai are not observed in living specimens nor in material preserved in 4% formaline.
