Abstract:A laboratory study was carried out to determine survival of transconjugant cells ofPseudomonas fluorescens intro duced into sterile soil. The transconjugant survived significantly better when it was the only strain inoculated into the soil; when introduced into soil pre-colonized by the recipient strain, the transconjugant was undetectable. These results indicate that intraspecific competition is a regulating factor limiting the number of transconjugants in soil.
