BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF PREPARATORY WORK OF THE 19TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF ENTOMOLOGY

We have been greatly inspired by the decision to host the 19thInternational Congress of Entomology (ICE) in 1992 in Beijing. The Entomolo-gical Society of China (ESC), recognizing its responsibility, has done a lot ofpreparatory work for the Congress since 1988. The Standing Committee of ESChas held a meeting for electing the Organizing Committee, Advisory Committee,Program Committee and Fund-Raising Committee as well as the Secretariat.There are two main cosponsoring organizations. One is The China InternationalConference Center for Science and Technology (CICCST), which is a nonprofitorganization for helping scientists to hold scientific meetings. Another is theInstitute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is the largestresearch center for entomology in China; it provides the manpower and logisticassistance. Our Headquarters Office, the Secretariat, is located within this Insti-tute, and has equiped with indispensible office automation equipments.Our preparations are getting favorable responses and support from scientiststhroughout the world, especially some staffs of council for the international con-gress of entomology are our members, respectively, of the Advisory Committee,Organizing Committee and Program Committee and are taking part actively inpreparatory work.The theme of the Congress is "Living with Insects". The opening address is"Theory and Practice of Agricultural IPM in China" by Prof. Zhou Da-rong andothers. The closing address is "Developmental Regulation of Gene Expression inInsects: Basic Mechanisms and Potential Applications". by Prof. F. C. Kafatos.Sessions of the Congress will include 7 plenary lectures; more thean 160 sympo-sia, workshops and special interest group meetings arranged in 18 Sections with more than 1300 invited speakers. The location of the Congress--Beijing Inter-national Convention Center (BICC) was completed in August, 1990 is an idealcomplex for scientific conferences and exhibitions. It has a convention hall witha capacity of 3000 seats and 43 meeting rooms of different sizes.It is certainly a grand gathering of unity and friendship between entomolo-gists of the world. An interesting complete successful congress.
