Abstract:The cytology of two hybrids betweenindica and japonica rice(Oryza sativa L.)was observed.The rcsults suggested thatlow seed-set rate of inter-subspecific hyb-rids was due to abortion of a part of em-bryo sacs.Observations on fertilized embryosacs showed none of proembryo and endo-sperm development was of abnormality.The majority of sterile ovules did not con-tain any embryo sac,but only a large darkspot including sometimes a few collapsedcells and nuclei.Other sterile embryo sacspartially developed but more or less dege-nerated before viable embryo sacs formed.Some of fully differentiated embryo sacswere not fertilized after flowering becauseof the affection of environments.
