Abstract:An in vivo method for labeling specific benzodiazepine (BDZ) binding sites in brain was developed using intravenously injected 3H]diazepam. Labeling of these sites is blocked by pretreatment of animals with high doses of pharmacologically active BDZs (but not by an inactive BDZ). Using this in vivo binding technique, specific BDZ binding is enhanced by pretreatment of rats with the GAB?A agonist muscimol or with amino-oxyacetic acid, which increases GABA levels in brain.
