Identification of diazepam binding in intack animals.

An $\text{in vivo}$ method for labeling specific benzodiazepine (BDZ) binding sites in brain was developed using intravenously injected ³H]diazepam. Labeling of these sites is blocked by pretreatment of animals with high doses of pharmacologically active BDZs (but not by an inactive BDZ). Using this $\text{in vivo}$ binding technique, specific BDZ binding is enhanced by pretreatment of rats with the GAB?A agonist muscimol or with amino-oxyacetic acid, which increases GABA levels in brain.
