Abstract:The mitotic events in eukaryotic cells are controlled by a family of evolutionary conserved cyclin-dependent kinases (cdk) that phosphorylate cell proteins, which results in the structural reorganization of the entire cell. Our recent studies of Drosophila syncytial embryos have demonstrated that changes in cdk1 activity controlling the assembly and disassembly of nuclear pore complexes also affect the structure of cytoplasmic pores in annulate lamellae. Here, we report a comparative electron microscopic analysis of the dynamics of these organelles during mitosis throughout the development of a Drosophila syncytial embryo. We presume that the distribution of annulate lamellae containing mature cytoplasmic pores across the cytoplasm reflects local reductions in the mitotic kinase cdk1 activity during the development of Drosophila syncytial embryos.
