Abstract: | The ferredoxin (Fd)-dependent glutamate synthase (EC 1.4.7.1) and NADH-dependent glutamate synthase (EC 1.4.1.14) activities are carried out by two immunochemically distinct enzyme proteins in maize leaves (Zea mays W64A and W182E). Continuous irradiation of etiolated tissue at 75 micro einsteins per square meter per second for 24 hours resulted in a 3-fold increase on a fresh weight basis in the activity of the Fd-dependent glutamate synthase and a slight decrease in the activity of the NADH-dependent enzyme. There was also a significant increase of the Fd-glutamate synthase protein during greening of etiolated tissue. |
