| Abstract: | A method is described for degrading 3-hydroxybutyric acid to obtain specifically and in good yield each of its carbons as CO2. The hydroxybutyrate is dehydrated to crotonic acid which is reduced to butyric acid. The butyric acid is then degraded stepwise utilizing the Schmidt reaction. |
