Ultrastructure of the chromatophore system on the tracheal bladders of the phantom larva of Chaoborus crystallinus (Insecta,Diptera)

The chromatophore system on the tracheal bladders of the phantom larva of Chaoborus crystallinus has been investigated by light and electron microscopy. The pigment cells are attached to a restricted region of the outer surface of the bladders and have the capacity to change both their shape and position on the bladder in response to changes in background illumination. The whole pigment system is tightly spanned by an extracellular membrane, which is in contact with two small muscles inserting at the anterior inner wall of the bladders.Nachdem das Manuskript eingereicht worden war, ist Walter Weber verstorben.
