Abstract: | Summary Chromosome cycles of the basidiomycete Cyathus stercoreus (meiosis and mitosis) are described. The fusion of two nuclei of compatible mating type takes place in the developing basidium at the end of telophase of the presynaptic mitosis. Synapsis follows immediately after nuclear fusion. During synapsis the chromosomes elongate, facilitating pairing. Meiosis and mitosis are essentially similar to those processes in higher organisms. Details of divisional stages are described and illustrated with photomicrographs. The presence of centrioles and spindles is demonstrated. The presence of quadrivalents as well as secondary associations of like chromosomes suggests that Cyathus stercoreus may be a tetraploid species. |
