CONCENTRATION OF 85STRONTIUM AND 137CESIUM FROM WATER SOLUTIONS BY CLADOPHORA AND PITHOPHORA1
Authors:Louis G Williams
Abstract:Major differences were found among living algae, saprophytic ecosystems, nonliving algae, and other organic materials in their ability to concentrate 85strontium and 137cesium from water solutions of different Ca/K ratios and quantities available from batch and flowthrough cultures. As expected, live algae, greatly concentrate these radionuclides. The concentration factors of nonliving organic materials were much lower and varied with the material, not with the Ca/K ratio. The effect of high Ca++ and high K+ was to lower the uptake of cesium more than strontium.
