Chiral inorganic [16O, 17O, 18O]thiophosphate: Synthesis and stereochemical analysis

(S)-2-Iodo-1-phenylethanol has been synthesized and shown to be a reagent for the stereochemical analysis of chiral inorganic ¹⁶O, ¹⁷O, ¹⁸O]thiophosphate. R and S Inorganic ¹⁶O, ¹⁷O, ¹⁸O-labeled thiophosphates were synthesized and treated with the iodo compound to give chirally labeled 1(S)-phenylethanol-2-S-thiophosphate, which after cyclization with diphenylphosphoryl chloride followed by methylation with diazomethane could be distinguished by ³¹P NMR spectroscopy. The cyclization step was shown to proceed with inversion of configuration at phosphorus.
