Abstract:Penicilliosis is a disease caused by Penicillium marneffei, a fungus endemic to Southeast Asia. Prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, infection was exceedingly rare, but penicilliosis is currently one of the most common opportunistic infections in persons with HIV/AIDS in some Asian countries. This paper describes the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and epidemiology of this emerging opportunistic infection and will focus on some gaps in our knowledge and directions for future research.
