Abstract:It has been postulated that acetylcholinesterase has a role in the maintenance of fragility and permeability properties of erythrocyte membrane. Osmotic fragility of erythrocyte membrane, acetylcholinesterase activity, and its apparent Km values were determined in the whole cell suspension and membrane preparations (± 0.5% Triton X-100) obtained from children suffering from severe protein-calorie deficiency both before and after dietary treatment. Osmotic fragility of the erythrocyte membrane was decreased at the time of admission and became normal after nutritional therapy. However, under none of the assay conditions were there differences either in the activity or in the apparent Km (acetylthiocholine) of acetylcholinesterase which were associated with the change in osmotic fragility properties of the membrane.
