Abstract:The Xenopus egg is a huge cell divided into compartments with distinct characteristics. The organization of the cytoskeleton reflects both the size of the egg and its regional differences. We review the information concerning the deployment and function of cytoskeletal elements during the changes in cellular organization accompanying oogenesis, oocyte maturation, and following fertilization.
