Abstract: | Cytochrome c is known to combine with phospholipids (1,2) and there is evidence that it also exists in the mitochondrial respiratory chain in close relationship with phospholipids (2,3).This study is concerned with structural transitions occurring in the cytochrome c-phospholipid complex when the valency of cytochrome c is changed. The fluorescent probe, 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid (ANS) has a quantum yield and a maximum emission wavelength that are sensitive to the polarity of its environment (4). It has been used to monitor changes of the structure of the cytochrome c-phospholipid complex, reflecting a polarity change at the ANS binding site. |
