Abstract: | Ehrlich ascites tumor cells selected for resistance (OR) to the toxic effects of ouabain, a specific inhibitor of (Na+, K+)-activated ATPase, differ from wild-type ouabain-sensitive (OS) ascites cells in their detachment behavior from protein-coated glass surfaces in the absence of ouabain. In the presence of ouabain OS cells are more easily detached from cultured vessel surfaces, but ouabain is either without effect (10−4 M) or inhibits detachment of OR cells (10−3 M) under similar conditions. The results are discussed in terms of the possible relationship between membrane ATPases and cell behavior. |
