Abstract:To determine a neuroanatomic location where bombesin produces hypothermia, bombesin or an inactive bombesin analog, [D-Trp8]-bombesin, were microinjected in nanogram quantities into various regions of the brain of unanesthetized, unrestrained, cold-exposed rats. Bombesin, but not [D-Trp8]-bombesin, produced hypothermia when injected into or near the preoptic area, whereas injections into other forebrain and midbrain areas failed to lower body temperature. These results support a possible involvement of a bombesin-like peptide in thermoregulation.
