Abstract: | The morphology, ecology, and taxonomy of a pennate diatom, Cymbella cursiformis nom, nov. (family Cymbellaceae), from Cedar Bog, Champaign County, Ohio, originally described from Tasmania by Hustedt as Cymbella cistula var. gracilis, are reported. Photographs of specimens on Hustedt's type, slide, are indistinguishable from Cedar Bog specimens. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy reveal that, this taxon cannot be considered a variety of Cymbella cistula (Ehr.) Kirchn.; therefore it has been raised to specific rank. |
