Linear oligopeptides. 56. Critical size for development of β-and α-helical structures of monodispersed homo-l-oligomethionines in the solid state

The infrared absorption properties of monodispersed, chemically and optically pure ‘amino-PEG’-bound linear homooligopeptides having the general formula $\text{t-}\text{Bx(}\text{l}\text{-Met)}{}_{\mathrm{n}}\text{NHPEG}$, n = 1–15 and H₂⁺(l-Met)_nNHPEG, n = 1–14 have been investigated in the solid state. The critical sizes for development of the β-structure and α-helix (n = 3 and n = 13, respectively), and the effect, on the latter, of the solvent from which the solid samples are cast, have been established.
