Diagnosis of intestinal malakoplakia by fine needle aspiration cytology

Two cases of intestinal malakoplakia were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. Clinically, these cases were mistaken for a lymphoma and a tuberculosis. Percutaneous abdominal FNA material showed numerous macrophages with the characteristic Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. These bodies were easily identified both inside and outside the macrophages in the smears.
