On the theory of Cherenkov emission from a short laser pulse in a magnetized plasma

Abstract:Cherenkov emission from a short laser pulse propagating in an underdense plasma along a constant magnetic field is considered. The spectral, angular, energy, and spatiotemporal parameters of the emitted radiation are investigated. It is shown that the spectral content of the radiation and its directionality depend sensitively on the plasma and laser-pulse parameters. For instance, the most intense backward radiation at the upper hybrid frequency is generated by a tightly focused laser pulse.
