Abstract: | The abilities of two bacterial strains of opposite tinctorial type, the Gram-negative Alcaligenes faecalis and the Gram-positive Rhodococcus erythropolis, to decolorize reaction medium containing initially 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg l−1 of the monoazo dye Acid Orange 7 are discussed. The dye-binding properties of the strains and the starting rate of the decolorization
reaction in dependence on the initial dye concentration are compared. An assumption is made that the higher dye-binding ability
of A. faecalis is due to the existence of an outer membrane. The experimental data revealed relative independence of the decolorization
dynamics on the dye-binding properties of the cell, which could be regarded as an indirect confirmation of the known extracellular
redox-mediator-dependent mechanism of azo group reduction. |
