Abstract: | AbstractThe literature on American Indian crime is a small, but diverse lot. In this paper studies of contemporary Indian crime and criminal justice are reviewed andc analyzed. Each study is presented according to its major thrust, description, or inference. In addition, the studies are described regarding the specific methods used and significant findings. Eight principal themes of explanation found in this literature are named and described. They are: adjustment/acculturation, social disorganization, traditional social organization, overt criminality, discrimination, over-surveillance, underutilization of legal resources, and recidivism. Possible explanations are suggested which heretofore have been ignored or never researched. Finally, both methodological and substantive ideas for future research are presented. In general, the study of lndian crime is an area ripe for future research efforts, and there is considerable room for new and more complete understanding. |
