Courtship versatility in the jumping spider, Phidippus johnsoni (Araneae: Salticidae)

A given male of P. johnsoni has at his disposal two alternative types of courtship. Each consists of distinctly different motor patterns and involves different sensory channels. If the male encounters a female outside her nest, he uses type 1 courtship. Type 2 courtship occurs if the male encounters a female inside her nest. Spiders do not respond to visual stimuli (house flies) under red light. The fact that type 2, but not type 1, courtship occurs when spiders are observed under red light is taken as evidence that type 1 is vision dependent, whereas type 2 is not vision dependent. Selection factors favouring the evolution of courtship versatility are discussed.
