Oxidation of hydroxylamine to nitrite catalyzed by hydroxylamine oxidoreductase purified fromNitrosomonas europaea

The oxidation of hydroxylamine to nitrite, which had been catalyzed by hydroxylamine oxidoreductase purified fromNitrosomonas europaea, was studied. The enzyme oxidized hydroxylamine almost completely to nitrite under aerobic conditions if sufficient amount of cytochromec or ferricyanide was added and the reaction was performed in phosphate buffer. Even under anaerobic conditions, hydroxylamine was oxidized to nitrite by the enzyme, but nitrite, once formed, disappeared when the reaction was continued for more than several minutes.
