Abstract: | - 1.1. The inhibitory effect of thyroxine on several DPN-linked dehydrogenases of mouse liver mitochondria has been studied. Since the inhibitions were prevented in the presence of DPN, it was concluded that the hormone released the coenzyme from the enzymatically-active sites.
- 2.2. EDTA, Mg2+, Mn2+ and PVP counteracted or prevented the thyroxine-mediated release of DPN from the mitochondrial glutamate dehydrogenase.
- 3.3. The results lend additional support to the view that thyroxine labilizes the functional integrity of the mitochondria rather than acting upon phosphorylation in a specific way.
- 4.4. Diethylstilboestrol was found to inhibit both the mitochondrial and crystalline glutamate dehydrogenase. The inhibition of the mitochondrial enzyme could be overcome or counteracted by adding DPN, EDTA, Mn2+ or Mg2+, but not by PVP.
