Electrofusion of cells: principles and industrial potential

Short electric field pulses of high intensity can be used for cell manipulation, genetic engineering and cell fusion. Animal, plant and microbial cells have been fused by this process. The technique may also come to be employed to increase the permeability of membranes to specific products, thus facilitating their recovery from fermentation media.
