Abstract:Plants have evolved elaborate systems for regulating cellular levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The redundancy of this network has complicated the elucidation of IAA metabolism, but molecular genetic studies and precise analytical methods have begun to expose the circuitry. It is now clear that plants synthesize, inactivate and catabolize IAA by multiple pathways, and multiple genes can encode a particular enzyme within a pathway. A number of these genes are now cloned, which greatly facilitates the future dissection of IAA metabolism.
