Variation in the seed protein profiles of Chenopodium fremontii

Electrophoretic profiles of water soluble seed proteins were determined for over 210 individual plants from 33 populations of Chenopodium fremontii. Little protein variation was encountered within populations. Interpopulational variation was pronounced, but in general plants of populations from nearby geographic localities or growing in similar habitats exhibited a high level of protein similarity. It is concluded that geographical and/or ecological races exist in C. fremontii, something which is difficult to document morphologically due to phenotypic plasticity.
