Abstract:A significant reduction in host serum malic dehydrogenase was demonstrated in Trypanosoma lewisi-infected rats. This prevailed during the active (reproductive) state of parasitemia, after which the serum MDH activity resumed normal levels. In vitro incubation studies involving trypanosome extracts and immune or normal rat sera indicated that the reduction was not a direct effect but of a more complex nature.
