Cardiac Vascular Formation

Cardiac vascular formation is a complex process and is the result of vasculogenic, angiogenic and arteriogenic mechanisms. In embryonic stage, mesoderm derived stem cells proliferate and differentiate into endothelial cells, then form primary cardiovascular system with other types of cells, this process called vasculogenesis. Angiogenesis means through endothelial cells proliferation the primary blood vessel plexus form the capillary where the membrane has no intact vessels. Arteriogenesis is the process of the formation of arteriolar in the membranes which have intact vessels, including the rebuilding and maturation of the inhere branch circulation. An overview of the cellular and molecular cuesinvolved in the formation of the heart vasculature before and after birth is given and some of the recent insights and outstanding questions on EPCs and other vascular progenitors both from a biological and therapeutic perspective are discussed.
