Abstract:A 40-base-pair duplication of noncoding sequences in polyomavirus specifically augmented the development of thymic epitheliomas following inoculation of virus into newborn mice. Virus strains carrying only one copy of this sequence induced a full spectrum of tumors except for overt thymic tumors. This 40-base-pair repeat, on the early side of the replication origin, constituted a tissue-specific regulatory determinant for tumor induction.
